I agree with your article in part but I don't think you can say that everyone who buys from these places knows about puppy farming, some people are ignorant to it.

The other day I passed a place in Swinton Manchester called dogs 4 us it was a big place and I assumed reputable. I had never even heard of puppy farming and thought this place would be breeding the dogs, I.E. you would be able to see mum and dad and the conditions would be good.

I went online and typed in dogs 4 us and the first thing I got was reviews on the place. This place was being supplied by puppy farms and suffice to say when I found out what this meant via the 100's of awful reviews I didn't buy from there.

I found the kennel club web site which lists all of the registered breeders in my area. Kennel club has rules like how often you can breed the dogs etc.

Personally I think the answer would be to say that unless you are kennel club registered you simply can't sell dogs. I absolutley love dogs, mine have been some of the best friends I have ever had and it would have broken my heart to buy from this place and find out later.

I agree some people do know exactly where those dogs come from and still buy them, but in my case if I had walked in that day with no knowledge of puppy farms and the pups looked healthy I may well have bought one.

Sites like this are doing well to raise awareness it stopped me from buying from a puppy farm.

But what are we, the breeders, to do? We turn people down because they are obviously unsuitable, knowing that someone, somewhere will sell them a puppy that will end up on rescue - or maybe not be so lucky. In an ideal world, everyone would have to be vetted and licensed BEFORE they could even buy a dog but that is not practical - so what is your solution?

I agree with everything you say. I think 'ignorance' has been used as an excuse for too long. In this age of technology it doesn't take a lot of research to find out the truth about these places, nor to find out how to find a 'good' breeder.

If people didn't buy from these places they wouldn't exist. However much I hate these places, it is the people that buy from then that are equally responsible for their existence.

[...] Marc the vet : Why the Growth in Puppy Farming? Because YOU are Buying Them. I didn't see the news story, but this is an excellent piece by Debbie Connolly regarding why people buy from these places. I used to think it was mainly ignorance, but I now agree with her that the majority don't want to be bothered by waiting for a litter from a good breeder, don't want to be questioned as to their suitability or want to buy a puppy much like they'd buy a loaf of bread - while some may not realise where they come from, I'm sure more still turn a blind eye to it or don't want to believe it because it's easier not to. Ties in quite nicely with some other recent threads on how much research is really needed and how much people take notice of that research or just go and do their own thing anyway.
